Charles Werner

Charles is the present ParadeRest executive director. Charles Werner is a 42 year public safety veteran (37 years in Charlottesville Fire Department). He served the last ten years as fire chief for the City of Charlottesville. Upon his retirement in 2015, he was appointed Charlottesville Fire Chief Emeritus. He has served in numerous local, state and national leadership roles.He continues to serve as a senior advisor to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. He is a nationally published author with over 100 published articles. Charles serves as a contributing editor and contributor to Firehouse Magazine,, Fire Chief Online, Emergency Management Magazine, and Urgent Communications. Charles presently serves on the National Alliance for Public Safety GIS, the International Association of Fire Chiefs Technology Council and the CSX Rail Respond Steering Committee.He is also working as project lead for the development of an unmanned aircraft system capability for the Albemarle County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team.
Charles has also received local, state and national recognitions. He is a four time recipient of the Virginia Governor’s Award for Fire Service Excellence and he was selected as the 2008 National Career Fire Chief of the Year by Fire Chief Magazine. In 2010, Charles was selected to serve on the ParadeRest Board and served two years as the Chair.
