A confident young man, Charles Foster Kane, takes the reins of a newspaper and builds an empire. Beginning his journalistic life in the pursuit of justice for those who had no voice, the lure of his growing power in society and politics quickly takes hold.
Based in part on the life of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst, Citizen Kane was the brain child of 24-year old Orson Welles and his co-writer Herman J. Mankiewicz (grandfather of TCM host Ben Mankiewicz). The controversy surrounding the making of Citizen Kane, the failure of its initial release and its rediscovery in the latter half of the 20th century is as fascinating as the life of the fictional Charles Foster Kane. Though Welles denied that Hearst was the model for Kane, Hearst didn’t believe him. The infuriated Hearst used all the power at his disposal to stop the making and distribution of the film.
