A Nickel for your Story is ...

an effort to record the stories of United States military veterans, starting with those from WWII, to preserve these invaluable and increasingly rare accounts for future generations. The stories will be recorded in exchange for a WWII era Jefferson nickel; the very coins carried in the pockets and purses of these men and women not so long ago.

May 8, 2015 marked the 70th anniversary of VE Day.  Unfortunately, the men and women of “the Greatest Generation,” who remembered this day, are leaving us too quickly. Many of these men and women still have sharp memories and meaningful experiences to share. Their accounts provide color and detail to the larger war narrative that simply cannot be achieved with books and movies alone. ParadeRest is committed to guaranteeing that these stories and the stories of those who followed them, never go untold and preserving them for generations to come.

James Monk Bingler Charlottesville ParadeRest Nickel For Your Story Daily Progress

ParadeRest successfully gained the funding for its Kickstarter campaign by many generous supporters. All of us here greatly appreciate all of the effort and support that we were able to receive to make this project possible. The funding provided resources to cover the cost of the audio and video equipment, marketing, printing, and staffing for student interns.

Over the course of the summer, University of Virginia students Javier Badillo, Tyler Lystash, Nathan Fogal and volunteer Jeff Boecker recorded and executed the project. They conducted over 50 interviews and edited and transcribed all of the videos. Each recording will be submitted to the Library of Congress as part of the Veterans History Project.

Senator Mark Warner Nickel For Your Story

After months of hard work and with the help of many individuals, ParadeRest is proud to announce that the WWII segment of Nickel for Your Story is completed.

On November 11, 2015 ParadeRest held an official ceremony to hand off the 53 Nickel for Your Story interviews to Senator Mark Warner.  They have been submitted to the Library of Congress. This event, held on Veteran's Day, marked the successful conclusion of a substantial portion of the WWII Nickel for Your Story phase of the project, but it is not the end of the project. We are looking forward to continuing archiving the experiences of American veterans, and we are still welcoming any World War II veterans who would like to give us their stories.

If you have any questions or are interested in becoming involved with or contributing to our narrative veteran history project for the Library of Congress, please contact us at history@paraderestva.org.
