Lt. Col. Martin Burks (ret.)
Martin Burks is a retired U.S. Army officer. He operates one of the oldest family-owned businesses in the area, J.F. Bell Funeral Home. Mr. Burks was has been honored with a ParadeRest annual award in 2013, and also has been honored in 2011 with the prestigious Paul Goodloe McIntire Citizenship Award for his “passionate, quiet service” to the community. This award recognizes area citizens whose good will sets a standard of service “while helping to weave a fabric of selflessness” to provide for the community.
A Charlottesville native, Burks served in the U.S. Army for 20 years. He retired as a lieutenant colonel. He graduated from Lane High School earned degrees from the University of Richmond, Central Michigan University and and from John Tyler College.
Burks has served our community in many ways, including a position on the Paramount Theater Board of Directors, the University of Virginia 20/20 Advisory Board; University of Virginia Community Advisory Board; and Jefferson School Partners. He chaired the Jefferson School Foundation board.
